Success of South Trafford Neighbourhood Living Well with Dementia Altrincham Open Day

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Altrincham Town Hall opened its doors to the community for the “Living Well with Dementia” Open Day. The event was free to attend and welcomed individuals living with dementia, their families, carers, and anyone interested in learning more about living well with the condition. Over 500 people from Trafford came along and welcomed the opportunity to find out more about the support in Trafford for people living with dementia and support for their unpaid carers.

The event was organised by the South Trafford Neighbourhood Programme’s Older Peoples Network. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a variety of local charities, support groups, and professionals dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by dementia. The marketplace featured stalls from memory support charities, carers’ organisations, homecare organisations, Altrincham Health Alliance Primary Care Network, local businesses and community groups offering practical assistance and social activities. The event also aimed to combat loneliness and social isolation, demonstrating that a dementia diagnosis doesn’t preclude a fulfilling life.

The day included expert talks providing insights into dementia diagnosis, available support, and strategies for living well with the condition. A highlight of the event was a performance by the Vibrant Voices Choir, a local dementia-friendly choir, which added a heartwarming touch to the proceedings. Attendees also enjoyed refreshments and a cake sale, with proceeds supporting local dementia charities.

This event was part of the broader Dementia Action Week, running from May 19 to 25, 2025, which focuses on raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and the support available to those affected by dementia. There are currently around one million people living with dementia in the UK but more than a third of people with the condition do not have a diagnosis. Initiatives like this Open Day play a crucial role in educating the public and fostering supportive communities.

The success of the “Living Well with Dementia” Open Day underscores the community’s commitment to supporting individuals with dementia and their families, promoting awareness, and encouraging proactive engagement with available resources.

Dr Liz Clarke GP & Chair of Trafford Dementia Strategy Group commented on the event:

”It was inspiring to see the marvellous turnout from the business community, charities, local health & care organisations and most importantly the people of Altrincham at the ‘Living Well with Dementia’ Altrincham Open Day. The event truly celebrated the strength and resilience of those living with dementia and the ambition of the community to compassionately and collaboratively make a difference to individuals and their families.”
